Following on from my work on melodrama in 1950s popular films, and on R.W. Fassbinder’s revitalization of the genre in the 1970s, my current project investigates the temporalities (of regret, of longing, of memory and trauma) that affectively attach themselves to states of blocked or deferred agency in film protagonists across a range of contemporary cinematic genres.
