Winfried Menninghaus reads Darwin against the background of archaeology, the theory of evolution, and philosophical and empirical aesthetics

Winfried Menninghaus' study complements Darwin's evolutionary model of aesthetic presentation and reception. Focussing on play, technology and symbolic practices, he investigates the transformation of sexual courtship behavior into human arts. The book develops a scenario of the conditions of the development of human arts, providing a complex answer to the persisting question: Art - What For?
